How can Europe preserve its cultural heritage?
Angelica Monaco, the director of our South Regional Hub, participated in a conference highlighting the role innovative technologies can play in preserving Europe’s cultural heritage. The event, entitled “Innovation in Methods and Technologies Applied to Cultural Heritage,” held in Rome last month, was organised by The DTC Lazio Center of Excellence in collaboration with several universities and research centers.
To foster collaboration across Europe, it is crucial for our team to understand regional innovation ecosystems and meet key players in the cultural and creative sectors. This is particularly important for the directors of our six regional hubs.
Robotics and digital preservation
Throughout the conference, 50 innovative projects using cutting-edge technology to preserve, enhance and promote cultural heritage were showcased. Notable examples included the use of marine robotics to explore the archaeological site of La Marmotta in Lake Bracciano, a volcanic lake close to Rome, and digital technologies to preserve the historical memory of roads paved with stumbling stones (or “stolpersteine”), dating back to the Roman Empire.
Speakers presented their research and findings, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation in the cultural heritage sector. Angelica was one of the panelists discussing “ecosystems of innovation, research and economic development” in cultural heritage.

The value of collaboration
“During my presentation, I highlighted the value of having a European network that promotes innovation in the cultural and creative sectors and industries,” she said, referring to EIT Culture & Creativity. “I emphasized our importance for local ecosystems, showcasing the ways we foster collaboration and drive innovation in the field.”
“The event provided valuable insights into how modern technologies can be leveraged to protect and promote cultural assets, ensuring their longevity and accessibility for future generations,” she said. “Overall, the conference was an enriching experience.”
